Christopher Darwin

Character sketch of Darrwin for The Darrwin ChroniclesVoiced by Paul Slingsby

Former lawyer, alcoholic, lapsed Catholic, Darwin grew up in Boston’s high society. He was taught to ride and shoot by his uncle, a former Texas Ranger. He has developed a deep hatred for the South because two of his brothers were killed during the war fighting for the North at the battle of Gettysburg.

After the war ended, Darwin discovered his father was meeting with southern landowners to preserve their fortunes and slip the ever tightening union noose. In a drunken rage he shoots two unarmed ex-confederate soldiers and is forced to flee.

For years, he wanders the broken towns and wastelands of the American West, from one bar fight to another in a permanent drunken stupor. Resurrected by Michaels, he is given a second chance at redemption. Deep within Darwin beats something unholy, something unnatural, which may prove to be his greatest test yet.

Katherine Braddock

Character sketch of Katherine for The Darrwin ChroniclesVoiced by Marcia de Deckere

Trained as both a doctor and a scientist in Edinburgh, she discovered she had epilepsy in the last week of her studies. She left and joined up with Florence Nightingale, serving in the Crimean War.

Years later, in the US, she ended up working in the same prison facility in which the New South was carrying out experiments on raising the dead. She carries several ghosts, the most debilitating of which was the operations she bared witness to in the prison hospital ward and the night she killed a patient out of mercy.

After an unexpected encounter with Darwin, she joined forces and became his ‘scientific eye’, trying to make sense of the unnatural occurrences and supernatural creatures they encounter.

She sees becoming part of Darwin’s circle as a chance to redeem herself for the past sins that still haunt her. She alone is able to understand the Demon that thrives within Darwin for she carries one deep inside her as well.

Isabella Maria Cortez

Character sketch of Isabella for The Darrwin ChroniclesVoiced by Justine Cargo

The head barmaid, Isabella, (part Yaqui, part Spanish), is very smart, which she usually keeps hidden. Often brash and outspoken, she gets into Malachai’s face more often than not. They’ve formed a strange father/daughter relationship, based on events neither wish to discuss.

She carries a Bowie knife under her dress, like her sarcasm, often flashed when patrons get out of line. ‘You want to drink? Sit down! Want to rut like a pig? Take it outside.’ She is sweet on Jesse, the town deputy. She also finds kinship with Johnny, as both are outsiders.

Isabella can be harsh and reserved, but within lies a fragile soul.

Jesse Q. Martin

Character sketch of Jesse for The Darrwin ChroniclesVoiced by Dylan Mask

The town deputy. He is whip smart, but learns more about people by not always playing that card. He doesn’t carry a gun, but favors a large bowie knife – the twin of the one Isabella carries. He observes the world around him, taking careful note as he does so. It’s a trait he shares with Darwin, who initially grates on his nerves. Eventually this irritation evolves into a sense of respect and admiration.

He shares a strong friendship with Isabella, but is slow to catch on, there’s more under the surface drawing them closer together. He seems to be waiting for something, a chance to prove himself under fire.

Johnny Two-Bloods

Darrwin Chronicles character - JohnnyVoiced by Phil Skala

Mixed-blood (part Cheyenne, part English), Indian scout, Johnny hunted Apache and Comanche for the U.S. Army under General George Custer. Trapped between cultures, he carries guilt as a traitor to his Cheyenne people. Self-hatred leads him to seek solace in the bottom of a whiskey bottle – a state Darwin is all too familiar with. Even this may be a ruse to camouflage his real intentions.

A keen marksman, Johnny can shoot out the eye of a coyote at fifty yards. He is an expert tracker of both the four and two-foot variety that cross him and Darwin’s path.

A Russian-Jewish immigrant, who left his family behind and fled the pogroms in Europe for a better life in the American West. He is a student of the school of hard knocks. Nothing was ever easy for him. He runs the local watering hole with an iron grip and a well-used double-barrel shotgun he keeps primed and safely tucked behind the bar.

He holds his former life close to his chest but tolerates and has a strong affection for Isabella his barmaid and surrogate daughter. He does not make friends easily, nor does he want to. Behind steely grey eyes, his many secrets confirm, one is not always as they appear.

Jedidiah Goodacre

Darrwin Chronicles character - GoodacreVoiced by Stephen McPhail

Head of the organization known as the New South, a group of former military southern landowners and politicians. Their sole purpose is to make the northern states, and especially President Grant, pay dearly for the physical and emotional damage done to their beloved south, during and after the Civil War. Goodacre was a colonel in the Confederate army and carries that distinction with pride and a commanding presence.

A United States senator in the Democratic Party, he will cross any line for payback on his enemies. Goodacre has many resources at his disposal, including money, manpower scientific information and expertise. This allows him to create and utilize weaponry, often not even invented yet.

He has made many deals to get to this place of power and respect. However, a few may be more than even he is prepared for.

Michaels

Character sketch of Michaels for The Darrwin ChroniclesVoiced by Sam Montesano

The mysterious man in the wheelchair, who claims ties to both the railroad and the affairs of President Grant, is sworn to stop the economic and military rise of the organization known as the New South.

He has saved Darwin from a grisly end, but underneath his charm and his quick turn of a phase, Michaels holds back the real intent of why he needs Darwin, and the reason why Darwin needs him.

Annie Elizabeth Pride

Character sketch of Annie for The Darrwin ChroniclesVoiced by Justine Cargo

Educated at the finest schools in New York and Europe, Annie was on her way to receiving a degree in Classical Literature. She had to return home, due to a scandal which destroyed her family’s reputation, leaving them in financial ruin. Her siblings shunned the family name and distanced themselves, leaving Annie to take care of her distraught and ailing parents. To make ends meet, she took what work she could: as a tutor, a laundress and eventually a barmaid.

When both her mother and father died, she moved to Boston. At first, she resisted Darwin’s charms, suspicious of his reputation and intentions. Over time, his displays of respect and genuine affection win her over. He became a window for her to look back to a world she left behind. Often lying in bed, they would spend hours laughing and chatting. Years later, when asked how he felt about her, Darwin confided, ‘I loved her more than breathing.’

Zachariah

Character sketch of Zachariah for The Darrwin ChroniclesVoiced by Dave Barker

“I always say, loss is a much better motivator than gain. Wouldn’t you agree?”

Nothing about this shadowy figure is easy to pin down. His uneasy alliance and counsel with Goodacre and his eventual end-game for the New South, keeps far more hidden than revealed. Difficult to decipher what game Zachariah’s really playing at.

Abigail

Darrwin Chronicles character - AbigailVoiced by Marcia de Deckere

Steeped in Boston high society, Abigail knew Darwin since they were in short pants. Playmates, confidants and sometime antagonists, the two drift apart in their teens. Abigail turned thoughts to balls and garden parties and Darwin to other pursuits. Both seem destined to follow different paths, crossing intermittently, if at all.

Shortly after her eighteenth birthday, something changes. She and Darwin grow closer, leading to speculation the two might marry. Seen by many, as the perfect couple to grace society pages. Though romance never completely blossomed, they form a bond stronger than that sacred union. Trust and a secret shared between them, never to be revealed

Chester

Darrwin Chronicles character - ChesterVoiced by Michael Craig

Chester is the sheriff of Chloride, Arizona. He is coming up on 62 years of age and has evolved into what you would refer to as crusty personality. He is a former artillery captain in the Confederate army who fought at Gettysburg where both of Darwin’s brothers died fighting for the North. Chester sees himself as a straight-from-the-hip kind of guy. He tends to always see things as black and white, but more often than not fails in the attempt.

Many years ago Chester was a good man, someone you could count on, but then Chester’s wife got sick. The bills piled up and in his desperation he made some unwise decisions and formed some bad alliances that would haunt him until the end of his days. The demons that he carries with him eventually cause friction between him and Darwin, resulting in a bitter standoff where Chester is forced to confront the man he has become and begin the long journey back to the man he used to be.
